The Hohokam people occupied the area now known as Phoenix AZ for 2,000 years. The “canal builders” dug 135 miles of irrigation canals with primitive stone tools, making farming in this arid desert valley possible. The Hohokam abandoned the Valley of the Sun more than 500-years ago. But to this day, it’s not unusual for ordinary Phoenix homeowners to find Hohokam pottery shards and other artifacts in their gardens.

The old Hohokam canals formed the basis for the modern city of Phoenix; Civil War veteran Jack Swilling noticed the old canals in the Valley and recognized the potential for farming. In 1867, Swilling formed a small farming community, and the work of digging out the old Hohokam canals began. One member of Swilling’s party, and eccentric Englishman by the name of Lord Darrell Dupa, dubbed the fledgling city "Phoenix", as it was a city born from the ashes of the old Hohokam city. Within 10 years, Phoenix AZ had 2,000 residents.

Phoenix continues to be a fast-growing and innovative city; in fact, it’s been a center for the tech industry since the end of WWII. Historically, Phoenix has been at the center of military electronics, and today, it’s at the center of self-driving car development, among other innovative tech projects. Likewise, the tourism and convention industries are very strong. Education and employment opportunities are abundant, and Phoenix AZ Homes for sale are affordable, even for first-time buyers.

One of the best things about living in Phoenix is its central location; you’ll be less than 2 hours from the cool, Ponderosa pine forests of Flagstaff, or the spiritual red rocks of Sedona. There are also many lakes nestled in the Sonoran desert surrounding the city, all with abundant fishing and boating opportunities. There is a reason why tourism is a big industry here; Arizona is a gorgeous state, rich in history and natural beauty, and Phoenix is at the center of it all.

With plenty of shopping, world-class medical care, and lots of entertainment and sports opportunities, Phoenix has no shortage of amenities. But above all, Phoenix AZ Homes for sale have year-over-year appreciation rates of 8.4% and a 10.5% 5-year appreciation rate.
