The Hohokam people occupied the area now known as Phoenix AZ for 2,000 years. The “canal builders” dug 135 miles of irrigation canals with primitive stone tools, making farming in this arid desert valley possible. The Hohokam abandoned the Valley of the Sun more than 500-years ago. The old Hohokam canals formed the basis for the modern city of Phoenix; Civil War veteran Jack Swilling noticed the old canals in the Valley and recognized the potential for farming. In 1867, Swilling formed a small farming community, and the work of digging out the old Hohokam canals began. One member of Swilling’s party, and eccentric Englishman by the name of Lord Darrell Dupa, dubbed the fledgling city "Phoenix", as it was a city born from the ashes of the old Hohokam city. Within 10 years, Phoenix AZ had 2,000 residents.
