The city of Surprise AZ began in 1938 when founder Flora Mae Statler came up with the name because she "would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much". For many years, there was only a gas station and a few houses here before the Surprise AZ real estate was subdivided for inexpensive Surprise AZ homes for sale to agricultural workers.
Since those early years, Surprise has grown beyond all expectations; indeed, Flora Mae would both be surprised and pleased. Today, it’s one of the fastest-growing cities in Arizona, with a population of nearly 138,000. It’s northwest of Phoenix, just 45 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a small-town feel but still has all the amenities a big city has to offer.
Surprise is a surprisingly sophisticated place, with public art dotting the city, and a city-sponsored art gallery in the lobby and hallway of City Hall. West Valley Arts HQ and WHAM Art Association and Gallery round out the visual art venues here. The state-of-the-art Valley Vista High School Performing Arts Center is a venue with 1,300 plush seats that hosts a wide variety of arts and cultural events. There’s a ballet troupe, a symphony and a pops orchestra. You won’t need to drive into Phoenix traffic to experience art and culture, when it’s all right here.
If you’re into sports, Surprise has the southwest’s biggest racquetball and tennis complex, as well as an aquatic center, world-class golf courses, and a fishing lake. To top it off, every spring, the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals come here to train. In fact, USA Today voted Surprise Stadium 2018’s Number 1 Spring Training Stadium. The stadium not only hosts spring training, but also minor league and high school tournament games.
A piece of Surprise AZ real estate will also put you close to nature; the city is bordered by the massive White Tank Mountains to the west and Lake Pleasant Regional Park to the north. The beautiful Sonoran Desert is always close by for hiking, camping, and even fishing, all within a 20-minute drive.
Surprise AZ homes for sale will not only place you and your family in a fun city, but it’s also a very safe city. The total crime rate in Surprise is 45% lower than the rest of Arizona, and 32% lower than the US average. If you’re looking for a family-friendly city, look no further than Surprise AZ.
