Steeped in Western Heritage

The town was founded in 1882, and the annual “August Doin’s Rodeo” is the oldest continuous rodeo in the country, and has been held ever since 1884. The event kicks off with a parade down Main Street and features food, music and of course, a rodeo. In May, the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo takes place at the Multi-Purpose Event Center, across the road from the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation.

In addition to the rodeo, Payson set the stage for author Zane Grey’s many popular Western novels. Grey first passed through Payson in 1918, and eventually purchased 120-acres of Payson AZ real estate along Tonto Creek.

The town has quite a few art galleries specializing in Western art, and for those who love Old-Timey music, Payson hosts the annual Arizona State Championship Old-Time Fiddlers Contest in September.
