A Paradise for Outdoor Adventurers

Payson is nestled within the tall, fragrant Ponderosa Pines, and the nearby Tonto National Forest provides easy access to all kinds of outdoor recreation. Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, mountain biking are just a few.

Fishing and kayaking are available at any of the nearby lakes, such as Bear Canyon Lake, Woods Canyon Lake, or the lakes at Green Valley Park. The area around Payson is also great for rock hounds. The town was founded in 1882, and the annual “August Doin’s Rodeo” is the oldest continuous rodeo in the country, and has been held ever since 1884. In May, the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo takes place at the Multi-Purpose Event Center, across the road from the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation.
