A Paradise for Outdoor Adventurers

Payson is nestled within the tall, fragrant Ponderosa Pines, and the nearby Tonto National Forest provides easy access to all kinds of outdoor recreation. Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, mountain biking are just a few.

Steeped in Western Heritage

The town was founded in 1882, and the annual “August Doin’s Rodeo” is the oldest continuous rodeo in the country, and has been held ever since 1884. In May, the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo takes place at the Multi-Purpose Event Center, across the road from the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation.

In addition to the rodeo, Payson set the stage for author Zane Grey’s many popular Western novels. Grey first passed through Payson in 1918, and eventually purchased 120-acres of Payson AZ real estate along Tonto Creek.
