The development of Fountain Hills AZ real estate began in 1970. The burgeoning town was named for both its spectacular fountain and the surrounding McDowell Mountains. However, Fountain Hills was not incorporated as a city until 1989.
During the 1990s, Fountain Hills was among the fastest-growing places in the state. Now, the population of this safe, upscale community has stabilized at around 25,000.

A Safe, Family-Friendly Place to Call Home
First of all, Fountain Hills has some of the best public schools in the Valley. Test scores in Fountain Hills schools are 48% above the national average and have good teacher-student ratios.
Second, the crime rates in Fountain Hills are much, much lower than both the national and Arizona averages. Both violent crimes and property crimes are less than half of than average. Overall, Fountain Hills is safer than 60% of US cities.
The City of Fountain Hills also has nature programs for children, youths, and teens; Kids Zone engages kids with games and activities that teach them about the environment. The city also sponsors Teen Adventure Trips around the state.
The city also sponsors a “meals-on-wheels” program for seniors and other housebound individuals.
Also, the community center has programs for adults, including exercise groups, arts and crafts, book clubs, dances, and games. The City of Fountain Hills is ready to help serve its residents to live the best life possible.
Nestled at the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, the stunning Sonoran Desert is never far away. Within minutes, you can be hiking or biking the trails throughout the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Here, you'll not only immerse yourself in the beauty of the desert, but you'll also have a birdseye view of the Valley below. You might even be able to see the Fountain spouting up, more than 500-feet into the air!
Hiking up the trail to the old Dixie Mine, you'll be able to see 800-year-old petroglyphs from the Hohokam civilization. The trail begins at the north end of Golden Eagle Blvd. You'll need to be waved through by the guard from the gated Eagle’s Nest neighborhood. Then, take the dirt trail for 2-miles up to the old mine. It's a fascinating and scenic walk into the region's storied history of ancient civilizations, miners, and ranchers.
If you're new to the desert, a visit to the Fountain Hills Botanical Garden is a great way to familiarize yourself with the area's plant life. The garden covers 8-acres, and features helpful signage naming and describing all of the cactus and other plants. The desert's birds, reptiles, and other animals also find the botanical garden a good place to call come.
Finally, Fountain Park forms the heart of Fountain Hills. This green, grassy swathe through the desert is a great place to take the kids to play or have a picnic. The park also features many of the sculptures commissioned by the city.
With 150 pieces of public art, Fountain Hills very well could have the largest collection in the state. The Centennial Circle sculpture garden inside the Community Center is where you can see the many bronze sculptures, paintings, murals, and photographs.
But that's not all; there is a majestic, bronze eagle on the Avenue of the Fountains named Freedom. Also, Fountain Park is home to bronze statues of George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, and other Presidents.
The annual Hot Air Balloon Rally signals the opening of the Fountain Hills Great Fair; during this annual event, more than 500 artists set up booths along the Avenue of the Fountains Boulevard. Later in the year, 200,000 people flock to the Fountain Hills Festival of Arts and Crafts to enjoy local artwork, food, and entertainment.
The Emerson Art Gallery and the Fountain Hills Artist Gallery display both local and nationally acclaimed artists. Here, you can buy original artwork to grace your Fountain Hills home. If you love being surrounded by both artistic and natural beauty, you'll love living in Fountain Hills.
You won't need to go far to buy groceries, eat out, or find a doctor. Fountain Hills has three grocery stores, two hardware stores, and there is also a Target right in town. The Fountain Hills Medical Center offers primary, urgent, and 24/7 emergency care. For the most part, you can find everything you need right in Fountain Hills.
However, if you want more variety, the shopping malls in Scottsdale are just half an hour away. Here, you can grab a snack and window shop at the Fashion Square Mall or the Kierland Commons. Both of these malls feature upscale, designer goods for both you and your Fountain Hills home. You can even check out a new Tesla while at Kierland Commons.
Since it's situated on the edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Fountain Hills is close to any service you could possibly need.
While Fountain Hills is a relatively young city, it has established an identity and lifestyle as an art-loving, close-to-nature community. With its low crime rates, community center, and good schools, it's both a great place to raise a family or retire.
Also, the town is well-known for its attractive, tile-roofed, Spanish-style homes, and natural, desert landscaping. The architecture and landscaping blend perfectly with both the Southwestern desert and lifestyle.
